What it means

A resort takeover is a lifestyle event where a host books an entire resort, or a large part of one, for several days. Every guest in the booked area is attending the same event.

The format combines a holiday with a lifestyle party. Pools, beaches and restaurants become social spaces, while guest rooms and designated areas hold the play.

Takeovers happen at resorts that are otherwise ordinary. This differs from a permanent lifestyle resort, which runs on those terms year round.

Most resort takeovers run for four to seven nights. Themed parties, workshops and clothing optional pool time are common features.

Where the line actually sits

A full takeover closes the resort to the public. A partial takeover books a section, and vanilla guests may share restaurants and lobbies.

Clothing rules differ by event and by country. Some takeovers allow nudity at the pool, some allow topless only and some require swimwear everywhere.

Play areas vary. Some hosts build a large playroom in a ballroom. Others rely entirely on guest rooms and keep public spaces social.

  • It is a week of nonstop parties. Most days are quiet. Guests read, swim and eat. Parties usually happen in the evening.
  • Everyone is highly experienced. Takeovers attract couples at every stage. Many first-timers choose a resort precisely because the pace is slower.

Common mistakes

  • Booking a partial takeover expecting a closed resort, then finding families in the restaurant.
  • Treating the first night like a club night and running out of energy by midweek.
  • Assuming that nudity at the pool signals interest in play.
  • Skipping the daytime social hours, which is where most friendships and invitations begin.
  • Agreeing to plans on day two that neither of you wants on day five, and feeling unable to step back.
